"The Age of Claudius" was characterized by important additions to the water infrastructure of Rome. Most important of these was the completion of the Aqua Claudia and the Aqua Anio Novus, both aqueducts begun under the aegis of Caligula, but completed by Claudius, and dedicated in 52 AD. Pliny remarked that these two aqueducts, higher in elevation than all the others, could supply the entire city. Certainly these were the most impressive aqueduct arcades, both within and without the walls, ruins of which can still be seen today near the Porta Maggiore, where they enter the city walls. Claudius also sponsored a restoration of the Aqua Virgo, reinforcing and decorating one of its arches with a triumphal portal. This arch, "Arco di Claudio" can still be seen today near the Fontana di Trevi.
